Behind

Art

Jessie is a sculptor and lens-based artist exploring the emotional resonance of flowers and their connection to human experience.

Her work centres on themes of hope, renewal, belonging and the fragile beauty found in nature.

Nine years ago, Jessie left a career as a family lawyer, where she spent years immersed in the emotional experiences of divorce and separation. The turning point came during her beloved aunt’s illness and eventual passing from cancer. Witnessing her decline, alongside the daily emotional toll of her legal work, prompted a profound personal reckoning. She needed to find hope, beauty, and meaning, all of which was missing from both her professional and personal life.

Shortly after, she became a mother. The successive experiences of death and birth offered a powerful, contrasting lens through which she began to see her place in the world. Her son’s arrival brought a renewed sense of wonder, and with it, the beginning of her artistic journey.

Now, she sees a parallel between herself and non-native species: both are transplants from across the world that have flourished in their new habitats.

She began creating floral sculptures.

These intimate pieces gave form to her emotions and honoured cycles of life and loss. Over time, she expanded into photography, using the medium to deepen and broaden the stories she tells. She has started exploring non-floral subjects in her art like birds, moths, and butterflies, touching upon themes of preservation, species-specific relationships, and belonging. Today, she works across both sculpture and lens-based practices to explore the interconnectedness of flowers, birds, and insects, and our human connection with them, and using Dutch still life as inspiration.

As a first-generation Hong Konger raised in Canada, Jessie's work is deeply informed by the cultural complexity of growing up between worlds. Her upbringing was shaped by both immigrant sensibilities and Canadian experiences, creating a layered lens through which she views nature, beauty, and belonging.
